Hauppauge, NY (January 10, 2012)- Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone today signed his first bill which allows the creation of more than 800 jobs by lowering Canon USA, Inc.’s connection fees to Southwest Sewer district. The new local law amends the connection agreement between Canon and the Southwest District by reducing the fee from $30.00 per gallon to $15.00 per gallon which was the fee the district charged at the time that Canon purchased the Melville property.

“I am proud that the first bill I signed into law will help create good-paying Suffolk County jobs,” Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone said. “Working together with the Legislature, we will make sure Suffolk becomes competitive once again in order to attract new and better paying jobs. By leveling the playing field for companies that are looking to invest in Suffolk County, we’re investing in our county’s collective future.”

Canon USA, Inc. is building its new world headquarters in Melville. Construction is expected to finish in Fall, 2012.

"Canon appreciates the support we have received from Suffolk County, and all levels of government, that has enabled us to turn our vision for a world-class headquarters into a reality," said Seymour Liebman, executive vice president and chief administrative officer for Canon U.S.A. "We look forward to working with County Executive Bellone as we complete our Melville headquarters and have a positive impact on Suffolk County."

“Bringing jobs to Suffolk is a top priority,” said Legislator Lou D’Amaro. “This bill encourages Canon to further expand and create even more higher paying positions for our residents. I am honored that this was the first piece of legislation signed by our new County Executive Steve Bellone, and I look forward to working with him to make Suffolk even more business friendly.”

“This bill is one more indication that Suffolk County is in the business of working with business,” said Legislator Wayne Horsley.
